Flagship research project
Addressing the need to significantly increase the implementation of nature-based solutions in the Atlantic Area, to minimize the effects of climate change
NBRACER is a four-year project, financed with funds from the Horizon Europe Program (research and innovation actions in support of the implementation of the Climate Change Adaptation Mission), with 17.4 million € (754,687.5€ IHCantabria), and implemented by a team of 29 entities from different European countries (Netherlands, Spain, France, Denmark, Italy and Portugal).
Challenge
To increase climate resilience in the European Atlantic Biogeographic Region (EBR) through the joint development and design of sustainable Nature-based solutions (NBS) integrated into regional landscapes of different nature (coastal, rural and urban).
Solution
Create community-supported adaptation paths, involving teams that test and validate SBN catalogs to be implemented in different territories. Innovative technical and transformational support packages for adaptation will provide quantitative mapping methods and a transformative action approach, enabling capacity building, as well as networking to scale up solutions and create connections within regions.
Results
To increase climate resilience in the European Atlantic Biogeographic Region, NBRACER will design, develop and test the efficiency of tailor-made SBNs, combining technological and social innovation. This will be done in 8 regions, within 6 countries, 5 “Demonstrator Regions”: Cantabria (ES), Central Denmark (DK), New Aquitaine (FR), Municipality of Porto (PT), West Flanders (BE); with replication in 3 other “Replication Regions”: Cávado (PT), East Flanders (BE) and Province of Friesland (NL).
