2024 ANNUAL REPORT

Scientific and innovative knowledge at the service of society

In 2024 our research capacity has taken a qualitative and quantitative leap, which has allowed us to consolidate our leadership in science applied to problems regarding the water-related social-ecological systems

In 2024 IHCantabria has reaffirmed its position as a benchmark in applied research. The collective effort of our staff has allowed us to effectively address environmental challenges, consolidating our role as a key factor in the international scientific community.

This year has also been significant in terms of academic education with the defense of five doctoral theses. This achievement is evidence of our dedication to training new researchers and strengthening knowledge in strategic areas.

In the field of research, IHCantabria has participated in 74 R+D projects, distributed almost equally between national and international projects. Among them, it is worth mentioning the projects linked to the Marine Science Program (PCM, for its acronym in Spanish), funded by the European Union-NextGenerationEU, by the Ministry of Science and Innovation, through the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR, for its acronym in Spanish), and by the Government of Cantabria. The PCM projects, whose value has exceeded one million euros in 2024, contributed significantly to our total funding in R+D projects, which has reached more than 5.3 million euros in 2024.

The consolidation of the three new research groups created in 2023 has been another important milestone, strengthening our capabilities to address scientific challenges in key areas. In addition, the Hydrobiology Laboratory has made outstanding advances in environmental DNA, a fundamental discipline for developing innovative solutions to environmental challenges.

The impact of our research is also reflected in this year’s scientific output, with the publication of more than 50 articles in high-impact journals, including prestigious titles such as Nature. This result underscores our commitment to excellence and relevance in the international scientific landscape.

Finally, the efforts of our team have been recognized through several awards, both individual and collective (see Awards section). These awards reinforce our reputation as a center of scientific excellence, highlighting the impact and quality of our contributions at national and international level.
