2024 ANNUAL REPORT

Study and monitoring of the impact of sewage system discharges in Urdaibai and implementation of an early warning system

Implementing an integral digital twin (CICLOPE) of the Urdaibai estuary sanitation system

CICLOPE URDAIBAI is a 27-month project financed by the Consorcio de Aguas Bilbao Bizkaia with 253,400 €.

Challenge

The sewage network belonging to the Busturialdea region discharges into the Biosphere Reserve and Conservation Area formed by the Urdaibai estuary. In order to be able to analyze the effects of this cleanup and plan improvement actions, a digital twin is needed that includes the effects of discharges on water quality.

Solution

Characterize the drained basins and overflow points of the network, whose information is used to study the effects of sanitation on bacteriological water quality. Develop and implement numerical models of processes (hydrodynamics and water quality) to understand and analyze the operation of the system and feed information to the digital twin CICLOPE, verifying the high scalability of this system developed by IHCantabria to act as an early warning system.

Results

Numerical modeling of hydrodynamic and physico-chemical-biological processes has allowed us to understand the functioning of the holistic system of the Urdaibai estuary-Busturialdea drainage. Its results have been used to develop the digital twin based on artificial intelligence techniques (deep learning) CICLOPE URDAIBAI, capable of providing daily predictions of river flows, hydrographs and polutograms in the network discharges and the evolution of the concentration of fecal bacteria in the water (2-3 days ahead), facilitating the management of sanitation and water quality in the Urdaibai estuary.

Results

Numerical modeling of hydrodynamic and physicochemical-biological processes has allowed understanding the Urdaibai estuary, as well as the sanitation of Busturialdea, considering hydrodynamics and transport influenced by river, tidal dynamics and the joint action of waves and currents, predominantly depending on the estuary area. The results were used to develop the digital twin CICLOPE URDAIBAI, based on artificial intelligence (deep learning), which predicts daily river flows, discharges and the evolution of fecal bacteria in the water (2-3 days ahead), facilitating the management of sanitation and water quality of the Urdaibai estuary.
