RIBERA C3 Platform: Adaptation to Climate Change in Latin America and the Caribbean

Adaptation to climate change requires global experience sharing

The RIBERA C3 platform (IBEroamerican Network of Coastal Risks and Adaptation due to Climate Change) has been created with the intention of generating a space for relationship, sharing, knowledge exchange and education of all agents working in the framework of risk analysis and adaptation to climate change on the coast of Ibero-America.

Challenge

The standardized assessment of risks derived from climate change in coastal zones requires the implementation of efficient adaptation measures, with methods that maintain technical rigor and integrate the idiosyncrasies of each region, considering the great diversity of its socio-ecological systems. For this reason, it is necessary to transfer knowledge, experiences and success stories among researchers, technicians and managers.

Solution

IHCantabria has developed the project Risk management linked to climate change in the coastal sector of Latin America and the Caribbean (2019-2024), promoted by AECID. Within this project, the transfer of knowledge to technicians and managers from all countries was carried out through workshops and courses. More than 100 participants, 52 of whom obtained the title of Specialist, formed the first multidisciplinary group of technicians in this area. This initiative was consolidated through the creation of the RIBERA Platform.

Results

The RIBERA platform was created for AECID, as part of the aforementioned project, under the coordination of the Institute. IHCantabria is currently in charge of the dynamization of this platform, which aims to function as a connection point and as a repository of experiences to give life to an Ibero-American Network of experts in risks and adaptation to climate change.
